Public Drinking Ban

02 Jul 2009

There is no justification for outlawing drinking in public when this activity does not harm another.

The state should not restrict the rights of individuals unless there is a clear and widely shared consensus that such a restriction is warranted. It is important to note that disorderly behavior is already an offense.

Similarly , I would like to avoid drunk people - I do not wish to see , hear or communicate with drunk people unless I myself am drunk . This is because becoming drunk , and being drunk are essentially solitary activities - even in the company of others. there are those that will see a flaw in this argument . Namely , that not all people who drink get drunk. For example should we really ban people from consuming a glass of wine with an al fresco meal in a town centre ?

There should not be a ban on public drinking anywhere in the UK. In fact, in town and city centres residents should accept that some noise and disruption is part of City or Town Centre living. We should focus on the aspects of drinking that are harmful to others rather than the person taking a swig from a can of beer on the way home.

In British culture, people are herded from place to place, the only after 12 drink is usually the late night club with loud music and strong drinks. This encourages people to drink more and people increasingly don't get the concept of conversation and recreational drinking. This is why we have never made the transition to the more relaxed European attitudes that lead to a reduction in binge drinking. For this reason we need more public drinking in Town centres, and a more relaxed and adult attitude to the whole issue.
