UK Domestic Flights
08 Jul 2009UK Domestic Flights should not be banned, but a fuel duty surcharge should be earmarked to cross subsidise the development of greener modes of transport, says the Democrat. There is no reason to ban a domestic flight between London and Belfast or Edinburgh while allowing flights between London and Amsterdam or Paris.
The Conservatives are planning a series of new environmental taxes on flights aimed at combating climate change. The party will publish a consultation document on Sunday asking people for their views on various proposals. The proposals include levying VAT or fuel duty on domestic flights and a green air miles scheme.
The fuel duty levy and subsidy should be strictly linked to the efficiency of air travel versus the efficiency of other viable equivalent forms of travel. It should go directly into the transport subsidy to be awarded to applying companies according to their emissions per passenger, and not into the exchequer to be used on other projects.
