Britain's Relationship with the European Union
04 Nov 2009Britain should unilaterally withdraw from the European Union.
The European Union has evolved into an undemocratic, and centralized power, far from the Common Market that the British people originally consented to in the referendum of 1975.
The European Commission and Council, both of whom are not directly elected, form the highest of the law making bodies in the EU. The European Law that they make override our own national laws, if they conflict.
The European Parliament does not have the ability to propose or repeal legislation, making it a largely rubber-stamping, paper tiger parliament.
The recent deception of European citizens by renaming the Constitution to the Lisbon Treaty after the French and Dutch voted "no" highlights the contempt to which the political class now views the populous within the EU. The Irish voted "no" to the Lisbon treaty, a treaty which also required unanimous ratification, but the establishment continued to push on with it regardless. They made the Irish vote again, since they did not come up with the "right" answer first time round.
The recent promotion of the idea of an unelected President Blair, or David Miliband as head of foreign relations sum up everything that is worst about this Union, and why we are better off out.
