MPs employing family members.
11 Nov 2009Some Members of the UK Parliament are upset that they are no longer welcome to employ members of their own family to work in their constituencies or in the Palace of Westminster.
It is difficult to object to MPs employing their spouse or family member, provided that the employee in question is doing the job properly.
While the public are right to be outraged at the recent expenses scandal, it makes little sense to punish the Mps who employ a family member.
A ban on employing family members would be very difficult to police as MPs could simply employ each other's relatives instead. It would also raise questions as to what constitutes a "relative" since more distant relatives could come in this category, even if contact is minimal.
