Drugs Policy
12 Nov 2009Drugs should be reclassified based more on the degree of actual harm, taking into account costs to healthcare, social services and policing costs when deciding on their legal status. Legislation should also take into account the interactions of various drugs with each other.
The current bands of A, B, C and unclassified bear little resemblance to the known harm of the drugs in question. This was pointed out by the recent comments of Professor Nutt, former head of the Advisory Panel on the Misuse of Drugs.
A drugs policy that is based on subjective morality rather than scientific reality does not carry weight with the population - particularly the youth.
The Government's sacking of Professor Nutt was totally wrong, as it was his job to advise the government to the best of his knowledge and ability, whether that conflicted with established government policy or not.
