A Parliament for England?
06 Feb 2010England should gain it's own devolved assembly, in place of the House of Lords. It makes sense to replace the outdated concept of heredity with a fair system of representation for England.
The English parliament should be elected from multi member constituencies and use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) form of proportional representation that allows voters to rank candidates.
Devolution across all home nations should be equal and symmetrical, unlike the current arrangements where Scotland and Wales have different levels and England has none at all.
A devolved assembly for England need not cost any additional funds, the British MPs sitting in the House of Commons could be halved if their portfolio were reduced to external issues and macroeconomics.
Continuing on the current route would only result in more animosity towards the Union in England and the West Lothian question must finally be put to bed.
